The Bread and Butter Thing welcomes £15,000 donation from Amazon to support COVID-19 response

Food redistribution charity, The Bread and Butter Thing, has received a donation of £15,000 from Amazon to help support its vital work supplying food for families and individuals effected by COVID-19 across the North of England. 

The funds will be used to increase support for TBBT and its 30 community partners in Greater Manchester and Darlington during a time when people are increasingly struggling due to the impact of COVID-19. It is currently supporting 3700 households each week - a 460% increase on the previous 12 months. During the COVID-19 pandemic, TBBT is also supporting other charities from across the North of England from Eggcup in Lancaster, Open Kitchen Manchester and Food Cycle as well as projects in Teesside. TBBT is currently redistributing 65+ tonnes of surplus food each week - that's 154,700 meals a week. 

Speaking on the donation, Mark Game, CEO at TBBT, said: "Amazon has been a long-time supporter of TBBT. They've been donating food and household goods for over a year and we are working together to extend this offering further. This additional £15,000 donation comes at a critical time as we upscale to deal with the COVID-19 crisis. We've moved to a bigger warehouse and are taking on new staff and facilities, so we are doubly grateful for Amazon's support." 

Neil Travis, General Manager at Amazon in Manchester/Prashant Pandey, Site Leader at Amazon in Darlington added: “The work being done by TBBT during COVID-19 is a lifeline for the community in Greater Manchester/Darlington and we wanted to lend a helping hand with this donation.” 

The charity welcomed the donation as part of the “Amazon in the Community” programme, which supports communities in and around where it operates in the UK.
